Polylactic acid (PLA) is the compostable film most brands ask about first. It is clear, stiff and prints well, but it is not a drop-in replacement for PET or BOPP. Here is a practical view of where it fits.
PLA is made by fermenting plant sugars, typically from corn or sugarcane, into lactic acid, which is then polymerised into resin and processed into film. It is bio-based and, under the right conditions, industrially compostable.
Every layer, including inks and adhesives, has to be compostable for the whole pack to qualify.
Ask three questions: how sensitive is the product to moisture and oxygen, how long does it need to last, and where will the pack end up? Dry products with short to medium shelf life are the best fit.
We can trial PLA-based and other compostable structures on your product and filling line. Get in touch to plan a trial.
